What’s the best gas heater?

A flued gas heater or an electric gas heater are among the best types of gas heaters to purchase. Flued gas heaters are more cost effective and are ideal for heating larger spaces. Flued gas heaters vent harmful chemicals, such as carbon monoxide, outside of the home through a chimney. Flued gas heaters are also unlikely to cause condensation, which creates mould. The air pollutants and water vapour escape the house and ensure higher safety with flued gas heaters. Electric gas heaters are the cheaper option. They create no air pollution or chemicals within the house, and are ideal for heating smaller spaces.

What is a flued gas heater?

Flued gas heaters are the safer option when considering the purchase of a gas heater. Flued gas heaters vent harmful chemicals, such as carbon monoxide, outside of the home through a chimney. Flued gas heaters are also unlikely to cause condensation, which creates mould. The air pollutants and water vapour escape the house and ensure higher safety with flued gas heaters. Not to be confused with unflued gas heaters, which are significantly more dangerous. Unflued gas heaters vent the harmful chemicals and air pollutants directly into your home, and can cause condensation which creates mould. When purchasing a gas heater, it is safest to use a flued gas heater.

Is gas heating bad for you?

If installed correctly and maintained regularly, gas heating is not harmful to your health. Although, the most common problems affecting your health would be faulty gas heaters that emit carbon monoxide and other harmful chemicals directly into your home. This is mostly the case with unflued gas heaters. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, so it is very difficult to detect without a system. To ensure safety, consider purchasing a carbon monoxide alarm and having a licensed plumber install and maintain your gas heater. Gas heaters should be serviced minimum every two years. Flued gas heaters are safe, and will not cause harm if there is proper ventilation and installed professionally.

Do flued gas heaters cause condensation?

Flued gas heaters are unlikely to cause condensation. This is because air pollutants and water vapour are vented outside of the house through a chimney. Unflued gas heaters are more likely to cause condensation. Unflued gas heaters produce CO2, and when combined with water vapour in the air, causes condensation. The condensation cause from unflued gas heaters can produce mould. The mould then grows from the unvented chemicals in the air. While unflued gas heaters cause condensation, flued gas heaters are highly unlikely.

Are unflued gas heaters safe?

Unflued gas heaters are much less safe than flued gas heaters. Unflued gas heaters vent air pollutants and water vapour directly into the home. This increases exposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. Both of these chemicals are very difficult to detect and can cause severe health issues. The safer option, a flued gas heater, vents these harmful chemicals outside the home through a chimney. Unflued gas heaters should be avoided. For the safest option, purchase a flued gas heater. If a flued gas heater is not an option, purchase an electric heater. Electric heaters produce no indoor air pollutants.

What is the difference between Flued and unflued gas heaters?

When choosing a gas heater, it is important to understand the safest option. All gas heaters burn fuel to create heat, which when not vented correctly can be extremely hazardous. Flued gas heaters vent air pollutants and water vapours caused by burning gas fuel outside of the home. This is done through a chimney or flue. Unflued gas heaters are very dangerous. Unflued gas filters vent the air pollutants and water vapours directly into the home, which has the potential to cause indoor air pollution. An unflued gas heater can expose you to higher levels of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Are portable gas heaters safe to use indoors?

Outdoor gas heaters should never be used indoors. Outdoor gas heaters are not designed for use inside, but there are indoor gas heaters available for installation. Indoor portable gas heaters are safe to use indoors when properly used and maintained. Inside or outside, proper ventilation is very important. Indoor portable gas heaters must be installed by licensed gas fitters. This will ensure safe use and proper ventilation. When using an indoor gas heater, it is key to regularly clean the filter for ventilation and to maintain proper air flow. While these are safe to use indoors, children and pets should be kept away. Always turn off the gas heater when unattended or when going to bed, and never sit on a gas heater. Are instant hot water heaters worth it?

Instant hot water heaters can help to save money and make your home more energy efficient. Tankless instant hot water systems use less water, which helps both the environment and your water bill. In addition, these systems provide continuous hot water instantly, unlike having to wait for water to heat using other systems. Instant hot water heaters also have a longer lifespan than tank water heaters. These systems are much smaller and take up less space under your sink. Instant hot water heaters only heat water when turned on, where tank hot water heaters are constantly heating water even when not in use. How do you hook up a dishwasher drain?

Connecting a dishwasher to a drain can be done on your own, but there are a few aspects to consider before diving in. If you are replacing an existing drain, it is easiest to copy the same drain hook-ups used on the old dishwasher. If you are installing a new dishwasher for the first time, you will need to install a drain fitting to give the dishwasher a place to drain. There are a few different drain techniques you can pick from:

1.      Drain line connected through an air gap to the garbage disposer:

Connect the trimmed dishwasher drain into the small side of the air gap with a hose clamp. The larger end of the air gap is then connected down the garbage disposal with a rubber hose. Connect both ends of the hose with hose clamps.

2.      Drain line connected through an air gap directly to the drain (no garbage disposal)

Connect the dishwasher drain hose to the small side of the air gap using a hose clamp. Connect the larger side of the air gap to the Y-branch tailpiece on the sink drain with a rubber hose. Connect both ends of the hose using hose clamps.

3.      Drain line configured in a “high loop” to garbage disposer

Pull out as much as the drain hose as possible from behind the dishwasher to create extra hose for the high loop. Pull the drain hose up as high as possible and strap into place under the sink. Connect the drain tube directly into the garbage disposer with hose clamps.

4.      Drain line configured in a “high loop” directly to the drain

Pull out as much as the drain hose as possible from behind the dishwasher and strap into place under the sink. Take the end of the drain line and attach it to the Y-branch tailpiece under the sink and connect with a hose clamp.

Can anyone install a dishwasher?

While you can install your own dishwasher, it is important to understand that this can be a dangerous job. Dishwashers use both water and electricity, which can be a deadly combo. To be on the safe side, it is best to hire a plumber to install your new dishwasher. A licensed plumber can easily install and check all areas of a dishwasher. This will ensure everything runs smoothly and all appliances are connected correctly. Another advantage of having a plumber install your dishwasher is the ability to install in locations away from your sink. With a plumber, you can virtually install a dishwasher anywhere in your kitchen. Without a plumber, you are limited to installation areas directly under or next to the sink. Plumbers will also be able to assess whether your cabinets need to be altered to fit the dishwasher and if any flooring needs to be removed.

How does ducted gas heating work?

Essential for central heating systems, ducted gas heating systems pump warm air throughout interior spaces no matter the temperature outside. Ducted gas heating systems include several components that collect cold air, heat the air and push it through ducts into interior spaces. The gas heater, often located outside, draws in air with a fan and passes the cold air over a heat exchanger using gas combustion to heat it. Once heated, the warm air is distributed throughout vents and registers. Operating a ducted gas heating system is simply done with a thermostat. Although, the system must have a heating unit, properly installed ducts, register vents and a thermostat to work properly.
