Water filtration systems work using two different techniques to remove dirt and chemicals: physical filtration and chemical filtration. Physical filtration involves physically straining water to remove larger sized impurities. Chemical filtration involves passing water through an active material or chemical that removes impurities as the water flows. There are four main types of water filters on the market.
1. Activated Carbon
One of the most common household filters, activated carbon uses charcoal to filter out chemicals and impurities. The water passes through the charcoal and the impurities are trapped in the charcoal. Cartridges have to be replaced very often (usually every 2-3 months).
2. Reverse Osmosis
RO forces water through a very fine filter membrane at high pressure. The water passes through and the impurities remain behind. These filters use electrically powered pumps to do so.
3. Ion Exchange
Ion exchange filters use sodium ions to attract impurities. These filters make water taste softer.
4. Distillation
One of the simplest water filters, distillation boils the water to kill bacteria, and condenses the steam back into clean water. This filter does not remove chemicals.
